From Zero to Hero: A Beginner’s Guide to Kickboxing

Are you curious about kickboxing? Thinking of joining some kickboxing lessons for beginners?

I know that joining something like kickboxing can be intimidating, especially if you don’t know anything about it.

This quick guide will walk you through the basics of kickboxing so you have some knowledge before taking kickboxing classes.

Basically, you’ll have no excuse not to give it a try!

What is Kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a dynamic martial art that blends boxing with kicking along with karate and Muay Thai.

But it’s not just about throwing punches and kicks—it’s a full-body workout that challenges strength, agility, and endurance.

Plus, it’s a great way to relieve stress and boost your fitness levels!

The Benefits of Kickboxing

Let’s talk about the benefits of kickboxing and why it’s more than just a physical activity.

Sure, you’ll tone your muscles and improve your cardiovascular health, but kickboxing offers so much. It’s a great way to improve coordination, balance, and flexibility.

It’s also an excellent outlet for releasing pent-up energy and reducing stress. And let’s not forget the confidence boost that comes from mastering new skills and pushing your limits!

Kickboxing Basics

If you’re a kickboxing beginner, you’ll learn the basic building blocks, such as:

  • Jab
  • Hook
  • Uppercut
  • Slip
  • Kick

Over time, you’ll learn how to use these basics in different combinations to develop some serious kickboxing skills.

Just don’t be discouraged if you don’t get these right away! No one who starts kickboxing as a beginner knows all this stuff. If you keep at it, you’ll be throwing punches and kicks like a pro in no time!

Kickboxing Gear

Before you hit the punching bag, it’s important that you gear up properly. Basic gear includes

  • High-quality gloves to protect your hands and wrists
  • Hand wraps to provide extra support and stability
  • Shin guards to shield your lower legs from impact
  • Breathable clothing to keep you cool and comfortable

Most kickboxing studios will provide the necessary gear to learn kickboxing – except for the clothes, that’s on you!

You will not find a more invested coach and friend—someone who caters to and accommodates each person individually. She is truly passionate about what she does, and it shows through her work and dedication. I look forward to every session and have been attending for over 4 years now. I am proud of the goals I have achieved, both mentally and physically, and I thank Amanda for her encouragement and knowledge.

I’ve been going to Amanda’s women’s only kick boxing class for about 6 months now and I LOVE it. When I went in there for the first time I was nervous, this was the first time I was ever stepping into a gym/studio or taking a class of any sort, I didn’t know what to expect but almost immediately the anxiety left and I felt comfortable. Amanda is an amazing coach and human. She’s a huge part of the reason I stuck with it. The workouts are great, the classes are fun, and it’s so nice to be in a room full of women cheering each other on. Highly recommend checking it out!

I started taking my daughter to kickboxing classes in Saint John as a way to help her deal with stress and trauma. Amanda has been absolutely amazing with her and for the first time (I think ever) my daughter has found an activity she looks forward to participating in. What was supposed to be a once a week commitment has turned into twice a week – and what has become extremely beneficial for her has been beneficial for me as well. Even if you don’t know anything about kickboxing, or haven’t broken a sweat in an embarassingly long time (I’m speaking from experience), I highly recommend KickBasics for your physical and emotional health.
